<VV> Crankcase Variants

I ripped into the engine that came in my convertible today.  It was 
locked up, so I had put another good engine in.  Anyway this engine is a 
July 2nd block, I believe 63, ZF 102, PG code.  This cant be original to 
my vert, since the car is a very early 63, date code 10A, with 80 
4-Speed originally.  So thats first week of October right?  Anyway this 
enigne had thrown a rod, pushed it through the crankcase top cover and 
jammed the rod.  Anyway the case has cast in impressions for the late 
crank.  It does not have the ribs though on the side by the 
bellhousing.  Was this a mid year change gearing up for the late 
engines?  Seems a bit strange to see one without the strengthening ribs, 
but the impressions for the long crank.
