My '65 Corsa was the same way.  Both the grill and the shaft needed work.  
The grill  was bowed so I took the time to fit it without the shaft in place 
first.  I used the palm of my hand (I'd probably use a folded towel on the grill 
and a rubber mallet today) to take the bulge (bow) out of it around the wiper 
shaft hole.  I also replace the shaft as it was bent slighly upwards and 
interfered with the grill.

It's what Rolls Royce used to call "fitting pieces together" before laser 
alignment etc.
