Check the antenna connections.  Two of my radios (years back) had rusted 
connectors--one a rusty socket in the radio where the cable plubs in and the other 
at the (rear fender mount) antenna base.  A quick check is to remove the 
antenna from the radio (twisting it as you pull out, sight check the socket and 
plug in a new antenna cable--no need to install the antenna, the cable alone 
with give a strong enough signal.

You could have a tuner with weakened sensitivity, but try the antenna 
connections first--it's cheaper.
