<VV> replacing generator

I replaced my old burned up unit with one that had been sitting around.  I tested it by turning over the engine for a few minutes and listened and smelled for anything unusual.
After doing some reading I realize maybe I should have polarized the generator.  Is there anything I can do now to make sure that the regulator and generator are working as a team.  Thanks
