The problem with the stones is that when they get blocked they push back 
against the spring and allow unfiltered gas into the carb. I agree that it 
is likely that the sock may have been either blown off or ruptured with the 
air blast again letting crud into the lines

My suggestion would be to pull the carbs and clean out the bowls (& check 
for excess crud) and then install a cannister filter in the line until you 
can take the time to pull the sender and replace the sock/ clean the tank.
