I don't have all the answers to all of your questions, but can chime in on the last one. I started autocrossing my car with the stock steering setup and was getting quite a workout on my arms. I was fortunate to have a club member bring in a factory quick box and a set of factory quick arms to a meeting at the very time I was getting ready to purchase the Flaming River setup. I snapped up the factory setup and what a difference it makes! It's like day and night, with this setup and a slightly smaller steering wheel, the steering is very responsive. I actually look forward to salomns now.
 
The steering arms are only half the solution. You need to get a good steering bow too.
