<VV> Convention by motorhome

Grant,

I have a large motor coach (40 foot) that I have taken to car conventions . In my opinion there is no better way to travel - the REAL downside if you pull a trailer behind you is that you do not have a car to get around town. If on the other hand you tow a car behind you, it can be great. If you plan on staying in the motorcoach while at the convention, the offset in hotel room fees versus RV park rent should easily offset the cost of fuel (unless the one you are borrowing is a diesel like mine and diesel prices are still higher so the differential is smaller). If you plan to stay in it on the grounds with minimal hook ups, just prepare accordingly. My family (me, wife and two kids) can stay in our coach about 4 days without any hook ups of any type - two or less people should obviously be able to stay longer. The amount of time you can "dry" camp will depend on the amount of water storage you have (fresh, grey and black) and your generator and any restrictions placed on generator usage by those owning the parking facilities. Also, if the coach you are considering using has slide outs you might want to check with where you plan on staying and seeing if they have accomodations for extended width coachs. I have four slides - two on each side and there have been a couple of parks that due ot the layout of the campsites (trees, etc.) that I could not use all my slides. This might also be a point to consider in a vendor area as you are in essence doubling the width of the coach when they are out.

The bottom line is for you to determine why you want to use a motorhome at the convention. If it is for comfort during the road trip - nothing better. If it is strictly for usage during the convention itself, you will just have to weigh the pros and cons. To be honest, if it were just the wife and myself I am not sure I would bring the coach as I had rather stay at the host hotel and drive a comfortable auto versus a large bus type coach. But with the kids, it makes a long trip extremely relaxing as they can watch TV, play games, sleep, go to the bathroom, etc while we are on the road. Seldom do we go on any long overnight trip with the kids that we do not take the coach.

Hope this helps a little.

Bob

I would like to hear from some folks who have done a national convention
via large motor home. I have access to one and am considering it as an
option (the price of gas is why the word "considering" is used). Also if
someone already knows of the accessibility to the convention center vendor
area from such a mode, please drop me a line.
Thanks,
The Carbmeister
