  The impact driver actually worked better than I hoped. By that time I buggered the slot quite badly, but the downward force of the impact driver actually swaged in a new slot.
  So I did succeed one step short of drilling, but your note on the size is muiy handy, given my desire to not mangle the threads.

To remove a stuck jet, that is really stick, drill it out. Start with a 
small bit and move progressively up, to just smaller then 5/16. This will 
leave jsut the threads, and then they can be pulled right out.
