How to Hotrod Corvair Engines discusses this mod, but only for earlies. 
  Fisher describes pressing the pivot ball higher on the shift lever.  
You'd need to do the same thing on a late shifter, but I've not heard 
from anyone who's actually done it so I don't know if it will work the 
same way.
