<VV> strange noise from my Corsa rear end

Hi all,

Between June and Auguest I revived a solid '65 Corsa 140 convertible that had been moldering in a garage for about 12 years. Now it's back on the road and it goes like stink!

However, a problem is now making itself known. There is a steady "whump, whump" coming from the rear that speeds up when I accerelate. It's as if the car is riding across railroad ties. The sound comes on when the car is in gear and I am accelerating -- no noise when I'm coasting in or out of gear, so [I think] that rules out a bum wheel bearing. There is also no noise when I spin the wheels by hand with the rear end in the air -- in fact, I have yet to duplicate the sound with the car not in motion.

Everthing underneath seems tight and in place. Also, the transaxle is full of new gear oil.

Any ideas?
