Some companies do offer them at no charge to someone who will take them away. Try someone in the construction business. I have been able to get one or 2 this way.

An engine should be strapped to a pallet. Pallets can usually be found, free, behind grocery stores or other businesses. Ask first. 

"Ask first" are the operating words here. Even the big chain stores recycle their pallets. The sturdiest, used for bags of concrete, carry a notable deposit the retailer pays to the concrete company and passes along to the consumer.
