<VV> rear brakes...need some help.

So, my buddy Joe and I were outside attempting to put
the rear brakes in my car...and for someone who has
never done this particular setup, and the last thing I
did with drums was a really easy 49 Chevy...this is
like a labyrinth.

After getting much of one side put together, I went to
put the hold down spring on the side that has the
adjuster on it, and the spring is compressing all the
way, but it's coming up just a hair short, and it
seems nothing I do is helping as far as a little to
the left, little to the top...etc...

I have the longer hold-down pin in there, as I should,
but still nothing.

Any suggestions?
