No, Detroit is "North".

For entertainment, I found a table of distances between US cities and
averaged the distances.  Hawaii and Alaska were not included.

This overly simplistic math shows the average distance between these cities
is 1392 miles.  Gentlemen, we have found the problem.  ;-)
