<VV> 1968 thermostat doors

So what makes these things fail anyway?  Both of mine have been fine since I bought it a year ago but I just noticed today that the right one is fully open when cold.  With the warm weather here I'm not overly concerned but I need to get it replaced by winter.  Do they fail from fatigue or does something poke a hole in it or what?  I've been nice to my baby, what caused this thing to go plop?  Inquiring minds want to know.
