Hi Bryan,
The reson was to keep the hot air exiting the outsides of the oil cooler  
from re-entering the engine compartment and heating to engine.
 
I unfortunately don't have an oil cooler handy to photograph, so I  will 
defer continuation of this discussion for a couple of weeks until I can get  to my 
stash........Until then............
