<VV> Starting problem

My '65 Monza 110/4sp daily driver has been performing flawlessly for 
several months.  This morning when I was leaving for work, a problem(?) 
manifested itself.  The first time I turned the key, I got a brief, 
grinding noise and then silence.  Several attempts produced the same 
result.  Then, on about the 5th try, the car cranked normally..  what 
the H...  ???  Note: new battery wire installed in Feb, battery in good 
shape.  I will check the starter after work (assuming it starts to get 
me home), but is there anything else that I should consider??  Thanks in
