When the slinger is placed onto the crank it slides back far enough to get
behind the keyway on the crank and is free to rotate around. Is this normal?
Thanks for your input.

Smitty says: Oil slinger ?? Timing cover ?? 60s had a slinger at the
timing gear end of the crank. None others that I know of.

Smitty - You Dog! Ralph is talking about the other end of the engine, of
course. On V8's that is normally the Timing Gear cover. Not on the Vair, where
the timing gears live behind the flywheel. Ralph, - The slinger will be
clamped in place (along with the distributor drive gear) when you install the
balancer - or pulley if that is what you are using - and tighten it up. That
balancer pulley bolt can loosen up, by the way. If you suddenly have a timing
stability problem, (wandering a bit at idle) pull off the distributor cap and
check to see if the rotor can be moved back and forth (independent of the
mechanical advance) and if it tends to stay in another position and not return to
the same location. If it seems to move a bit, put the car in gear and see if
the balancer bolt is tight. Crank it down to whatever the torque value is in
the manual. - Seth Emerson
