FWIW - Last year I had this same question with my 63 Spyder when I 
replaced the coil and the resistor. When I first tried starting the car - 
there was smoke coming from the new resistor. Several members of VV told 
me not to worry  -that it was likely extra flux on the resistor. I double 
checked my wiring and went from there. Needless to say, they were correct 
and the problem has never resurfaced again.
