I whole heartedly agree with Frank Duval about using your brakes instead of 
your engine to slow your car down. One of the things I remember from my SCCA 
driving school, back in 1978, is that it is a lot cheaper to replace brakes than 
to replace your engine. Slow your car then match revs with the accelerator 
pedal and you can easily drop the transmission down a gear at a time.
