My wife makes fun of me because I save all our leftover margarine tubs (about 3" diameter). I stack them up and stack the lids separately. I use them to hold the hardware and small parts as I disassemble my Corvair. They are just the right size to hold related parts. I usually stack them up in order of disassembly and label them either with magic marker on the outside or scraps of paper inside. By stacking them, I just work back through the stack when I reassemble. I can also put the lids on them for longer term storage. 
  I do have a large stack of them, but when I do a big project, it puts quite a dent in them. Sometimes I wipe them out and restack them when I'm done, but they are plentiful enough that I can just trash them if I'm too lazy.
