Now that you mention it, many years ago I had a parts supplier that told 
the story of a Corvair camshaft with  oversized journals. They had sold 
it and it was returned because it didn't fit. It would have been about 
1970, and he didn't know what happened to it when the store closed. So, 
anyone with an old aftermarket parts book stash want to research it?

Line boring VW cases was almost standard repair practice in the 70's.
