The voltage needs to be regulated. A resistor alone won't do it reliably  and 
safely, since the load is no doubt NOT constant!

Man  those are old!  ggg  I'd forgotten about those....ggg

Get  a   50 ohm  50 watt  variable resistor.......turn it to  FULL  
resistance 
[ 50 ohms]

Slowly turn it down until you see  9 vdc with speakers working...
