I think the key is tightening the nut tight enough to hold it still. 
When the wheel is on the bracket properly the flat side of the lug nut 
hole is toward the nut so it won't be hurt by tightening. If you need a 
little more spaceunder the wheel you could place a regular lug nut with 
the tapered side up under the wheel.
