with aftermarket manifolds on most engines there is no provision for manifold 
heat to the base of the carb. driveability is not good until you get heat to 
base of carb somehow.  headers cause the same issues.  great to look at or at 
the strip but not practical on waterpumpers to drive on the street. i would 
start by seeing  how hot the minifold is at the base of the carb , or look down 
the throat of the carb after running it a short time.enjoy the view of the 
cone of ice under the throttle plates. same thing happens on corvairs with center 
mounted carbs.
