illegal -- depends on what you are doing, the officer you are talking 
to, and where you're at. Importing a car from Canada or Europe is 
different than talking to a local cop in Jacksonville that thinks your 
lights aren't right which is different yet from trying to pass some 
inspection where they actually look at your lights.

in Corvairs -- direct 5¼ replacements by a brand name manufacturer --

lights -- H-4 low beams, H-1 high beams -- standard wattage or high 
wattage with relays. I like the Silver Stars on low beam, but on high 
they don't seem as effective. I've had a couple sets running for about a 
year and a half and haven't burned them out yet, but yes, they have a 
shorter life as they are 'over driven', but they are a high quality bulb 
with the filament(s) carefully located for a proper beam in an 'E-code' 
light
