<VV> rear wheel bearing

Howdy Floks,
On a '64 sedan I took the rear wheel bearing apart, cleaned and greased 
it, and put it back together. Except I can't get the snap ring in it's 
groove. All parts seem to have gone back together ok. Parts put back in 
order, thin steel shim, seal, race, inner bearing assembly, race, and 
then the snap ring should fit but does not. Any ideas?
