Sounds like the classic LM dash ground strap problem.  The lower dash  screw 
to the right of the steering column is the ground for the dash.   Sometimes an 
oversized screw is the best  fix.
 
Are your high beam indicator and turn indicator lights glowing while the  
fuel gage goes to zero?
