<VV> Pantyhose?

I was reading the January 2, 2006 issue of AUTOWEEK today (I know I'm a 
couple months behind but I was in my allergist's waiting room).  The "Opposite 
Lock" column by Kevin A. Wilson on page 8 predicts the arrival of sealed engine 
hoods with "no consumer-repairable parts."  The writer then waxes nostalgic 
about "[t]he self-reliant American motorist" and gives the example of "a Corvair 
fan belt replaced with pantyhose."  Now, tell the truth, has any one of you out 
there ever replaced a Corvair fan belt with pantyhose?
