Keep in mind that a trunk mat was considered a deluxe option and probably 
contributed to reduction of road noise. In addition the design life of most 
cars of the period was about five years and most cars of the day were worn 
out before 100,000 miles. Remember that in the day a ten year old car was 
almost worthless. You could buy any number of interesting "older" cars with 
minor problems for $100 or $200

Is nothing confined to the Corvair, just about all cars of the period would 
do the same thing. and that so many remain after forty years is probably a 
big surprise to GM.
