Looks like
stock was a 3.11 first gear, same as the Vega but I know of 2.98 (V-8
Monza) , 2.84, & 2.54 gearsets (all ratios changed proportionately) as well
as a 3.50 stump puller.

Can you just swap ?

The clutch/input gear is unique to the Corvair. (Hollow for the long input
shaft to engage it) In order to swap in another gear set, a special
clutch/input gear has to be built. Many were made by welding up a smoothed out corvair
gear with a bored out Chevelle input. Also, the Corvair stayed with the
particular Reverse gear location from 66-69 - Other Saginaws relocated the reverse
(and the reverse gear on the cluster at some point. Only the early clusters
from the Chevelle, etc. can be swapped in - unless you don't need a reverse
gear! - Seth Emerson
