<VV> Soldering wire connections (no Corvair)

Yesterday I was installing a 7-wire trailer plug connector to my truck so it
would match everthing coming from the factory these days.  Previously just
had a 4-wire flat connector and then a 5-wire connector for the electric
brake wire.  I thought I would "do it right" by soldering the connections.
It was too cold here in MI to solder!  Tried 3 different soldering guns and
none would get hot enough to melt solder!  So I used the old tried and true
wrap the wires together, crimp with a pair of pliers and wrap it up with
black electrical tape.
My truck won't fit in the garage due to a tall topper.
