Agreed ... budget at least $3000, and at that with you doing most of the
wrenching and fitting ... you will still be having some grinding and
balancing done outside, and I suggest having the valve seating done by a
corvair doctor ...

Think about using 5500 rpm or so for a street " redline" ... the vair 140's
can be fun in 2nd and 3rd gear, and that extra 3 and 6 mph at the top of
those gears makes it sound like a baby 327 .... Remember , it's not just the
extra rpm, but allows you to keep the torque multiplier of 3rd gear working
for you longer ... to me, putting a corvair in 4th gear is like giving up
the battle for the day ...

.......... one other performance thing you can do ... is to unbolt
everything that will unbolt seat-wise, and replace the fronts with lighter
seat(s ) leave the back just carpeted .. ( keeps noise down, you can still
throw groceries back there ... more , in fact ... ) ...

........... also, suggest you resist the urge to put on bigger ( * heavier
* ) wheels and tires, this can slow down your car big time, acceleration and
top end, and gain very little over a decent street performance tire of, say,
195 width ...

....... for street use, think " ralleye " setup more than flat track racer
.. there is just too much stuff falling off of work or junkyard hauler
trucks ... to give a vair that 1 inch of ground clearance treatment ... the
tradeoff is that you will have, with your higher and ( street tire )
spongier car , a little more warning when you top the hill and there is a
sudden 90 righty you had forgot about ...

just some thoughts, ken campbell, boy racer wannabee in Iowa
