To the all-knowing list-

I have some slop in my distributor, and purchased another to rebuild. It
had a little wear, so I ordered 1 bushing, expecting to replace the lower. I
got it apart and discovered there is no lower bushing in the housing. Is
there a bushing in the block also?

The stock Corvair distributor has only a top bushing. The lower part of the
distributor drops into an aluminum guide just above the oil pump. That
functions as a lower bushing for the purposes of the Corvair. There have been
rebuilder who have "double-bushed" the distributors during rebuild. To me that
means you have to align three "bushings" when installing the distributor - or the
distributor will "align" one of them by itself. At least one premium
rebuilder has installed a sealed ball bearing at the top of the distributor, using
the original lower "bushing" as the other aligning point. That adds a barrier
to the oil that has a tendency to migrate up into the points area, when
crankcase pressure occurs. - Seth Emerson
