i usually dip it in carb cleaner that i reserve for parts after a fast wash
in solvent. then most of the gasket will come off ok with a wire wheel (air
powered or bench grinder). gasket / paint remover does not do much with those.
big pain in the butt. i keep a clean one or two around ready to install.
sometimes soaking them a week or two works...like putting them in the pot and
forgetting them...the 3m disks do it ok also , but you can warp the edge with
them. my guys dont like using them around engines unless they are getting a
carefull rinse now. it has been written in the tech magazines that the residue from
those disks causes premature bearing failure.
cleaning parts is the worst part of any engine work.
