hi, Tony..to measure the coil input voltage, hook your voltmeter up red to + sidewhere the yellow wire is,and black lead to grnd....in the 'run' mode the juice from the key should be around 9 volts there, but when the starter is engaged the yellow wire gets (or should get) a full 12 ( more like 12 1/2-13 volts, same as battery )... if the pertronix red wire is simply hooked to the coil + term it won't get full battery volts when running, only when starting,,,which isn't your problem/question...if priming the carbs gets it started,it's a carb/choke issue not coil/voltage...no chokes on a 'race' motor is ok,but without them and the fast idle linkage on the street, especially with all 4 working 'full-time', you'll have hard starts...try giving it 4 (?) pumps, then foot off the pedal -but ready to stab again- crank...chokes restrict the air,and trying to compensate by dumping more fuel in is not considered good for the engine...Tom Z..//
