<VV> Oil in the cylinders

A friend of mine is having a problem with a 140 engine in a late coupe.
Here's the deal:

Very good condition engine, rebuilt by previous owner with all good
parts - ARP rod bolts, TRW +.020 pistons, etc. The engine has probably
a few thousand miles on it. It ran fine until all of a sudden after
sitting for a couple of hours or more it would smoke profusely upon
being started. It is to the point that oil actually comes out of the
tail pipe! He opened up the engine and can't find anything wrong with
the short block. The valve guides were worn and there were no seals so
he replaced the guides and put valve seals on the intakes. Everything
else looked fine. There is little wear on the pistons or anything else.

Unfortunately, this didn't affect the problem. He's let the car set and
pulled the plugs to examine them. On the left bank - all three
cylinders - there's oil sitting in the cylinder. It smokes like crazy
for a while after starting then runs fine. Restarting soon produces no
problem. But if it sits - it's a mess.

Any ideas?
