<VV> self-adjusting brakes retrofit Q

I am in the process of retrofitting the 1963 self-adjusting brake mechanism to my 1962 Spyder coupe.  It appears to me that since this mechanism goes on the rear shoes, this necessarily means that the brake adjustment slots in the left side backing plates (which are placed towards the front of the wheel) no longer line up with the star gear (for emergency adjustments).  Can anyone confirm this or tell me what I am doing wrong?
