<VV> misfire (slight correction)

That's right, the timing light is "inductive". So current has to flow 
for a magnetic field to be created, therefore current has to flow down 
the spark plug wire for the field to be read by the inductive clamp of 
the timing light. Those old neon style timing lights that connect 
directly to the distributor could work without a working spark plug.
