As we well know, the nice thing about a Corvair is the ability to quickly 
access the rod 
caps to inspect them. This is a quick check that should not be too 
discouraging amount of work to a new owner. 
I would suggest pulling the cover and looking.  That way the rods can also 
be inspected to make sure they are right side up.   I would look to what 
was changed recently as a source of the problem.   I have spun/thrown a 
couple of rod bearings on various motors.    It could just be a loose 
clearance that is so 
far holding out, but getting ready to go.      Rods can be so finicky on a 
Corvair.
