If the point plate itself is OK (it sounded like you may have replaced 
only the points -- the point plate very commonly wears out at the 
pivot point) the distributor is perhaps worned out.  You can pretty 
easily pop is out and check for radial and end play. If you need a 
replacement, you might be able to find a good (or at least better) 
used one, but a remanufactured one is best. Dale Manufacturing seems 
to be most folks' choice for the best remanufactured distributors. 
They may sell through the big vendors as well -- check their catalogs.

Also, you can probably reduce the timing "bounce" via a switch to a 
Pertronix breakerless ignition.  It drops into the existing 
distributor and is pretty simple to install.  It "covers some sins" 
(but not all!) of a worn distributor.
