I commend your courage....not many Corvair owners would dare turn in the idle screw before checking with their wife... :))

Subject: <VV> carb/ignition update

To all who offered advice on my stumble issue, here's the latest: Sunday I spent quite a while out in the driveway reading the manual and baselining the carbs. I undid all the adjustments and then set them all to factory spec, as I had not done this before, simply adjusted the idle mixture from where it was. It's hard to say where the idle speed setting was, but the mixture was 6-7 full turns out. WAAAAY too much. After adjusting everything to where it should be, I got 17 inches of vacuum at idle fully warmed up. Not bad for a 43 year old engine. I also bent the tangs for the choke idle kick-up, and was really surprised when I started it Monday and it actually brought the idle speed up to about 1500 rpm cold. It has never done that before. Driving it now, the stumble is not gone, but much reduced. I still need to replace the distributor, but that is currently beyond my means. To those who suggested dropping in a Pertronix unit, I agree, they do run better and hide/solve most point issues. However, this is my wife's car, and she will not permit any modifications to it. Not even helpful ones (especially considering how much I hate points)

Devin
