No but mechanics do put bare steel parts on without painting or otherwise
protecting. Mechanics do play Godzilla when torqueing the spark plugs
(should be 15-17 lb-ft as should a lot of components. Have broken wrenches
trying to remove parts others have apparently used a four foot breaker bar on.

Am also too slow to be a professional because I take excessive care but
that happens when you keep cars (or anything) far past the "sell by" date
and often a replacement part is not available. The Corvair hobby is blessed
with vendors that have nearly every conceivable part available. Until you
work on a few that lack that infrastructure, you may not appreciate that.

However, for many years I have been the only mechanic I trust for anything
beyond an oil change (and often do those to save time) and am equipped for
almost anything usually with the most essential tools - service manual and
parts book (even have assembly manuals for some).

Key is that mechanicing is not difficult, just must be learned and requires
a comfortable working space and the right tools. Anything else is just
discipline.
