<VV> Gas prices (no Corvair)

Actually gas -- at $3 -- is super cheap. In 1976 when the price went
up to $1.05 I swore I would not buy gas again until it went back
under a dollar -- ha ha. But, at the time, I was driving a 1973 BMW
2002tii I bought with 6,000 miles on it ... for $2,200. At $3 gas
has not even tripled since 1976 ... a late model perfect BMW with
6,000 miles on it (with all the options and the "hot" model at that)
is certainly going to cost more than $6,600 (triple what I paid in
1976). I would venture that $30,000+ is more like it, or 15 times as
much as it was in 1976. If gas was 15 times it would be $16.50 a gallon.

Also -- gas is priced differently in many states because many states
(foolishly in my opinion) adopt their own rules for the exact content
of the fuel. In Santa Barbara CA where you can see the oil rigs all
along the shore, gas is very high because they can't refine it there
(regulations against refineries), they have to transport it
elsewhere, make a special CA only formulation, and then ship it
back. Gas in AZ (with no oil rigs that I know of) is considerably cheaper.

And -- FYI -- the government is way too stupid and impotent to be
able to control gas prices with enough precision to affect an
election! But it makes a nice story.
