Yep, back in 1962 I had a used 56 VW with 100K or so on it. No idea how new the brake shoes
were---they may well have been OEM. I was living in Charleston WV but had a new job which
required me to spend 5 days a week training in Cleveland Ohio. So I had left the new 61
Corvair in Charleston for my wife to drive and bought the VW for temporary transportation.

Coming home on a Friday night I exited I-71 in Columbus (the interstate ended there since it
wasn't completed yet). Same feeling you had; foot went to the floor, pumped like crazy, then
started downshifting. Wish the VW had had a tach because that engine screamed. Anyway, got
it slowed down enough that the emergency brake working on one wheel got it stopped. The
lining on the left rear had crumbled into chunks. Luckily, the e-brake cable must have been
well adjusted to have still worked on the right wheel.

Called around Columbus and found a VW dealer whose service dept stayed open til midnight. A
new rear drum and brake job all around got me back on the road. I made it home to Charleston
in the wee hours that night, but in time to climb in bed with my wife of two years which of
course, was the real goal.
