I have a set of 95 heads to put on the car, if that would help--I am
considering this more or less to be able to run regular fuel, since that is
also a goal of mine. If a diff/trans swap is reccommended, I would be
willing to swap in just about anything I could trade for (preferably keeping
it a 4 speed).

Any ideas? Advice is mucho appreciated!

Tom - I would suggest a 3.27 axle as a big change - 3.08 grears are like
finding hens teeth for a late model. You can mimic a differential change by
trying some taller tires. It does somewhat depend on your regular driving. If you
do a lot of highway driving, the diff gearing makes a great difference.
Around town, not so much. Going to regular gas will reduce your day-to-day cost,
but mileage will suffer some. You will have to play with both timing and
jetting to get the combination just right. It is a noble goal. Also, take all
the extra weight you can out of the car. It really does make a difference. And
make sure your tires are fully inflated, minding the front/rear differences.
