Smitty Says:  Bob you obviously are not familiar with commonly used steels so let me enlighten you.  4340 is a high carbon chrome steel.  It is very tough with high fatigue strength.  Serves well in gears and shafts due to its hardness and strength.  Can be hardened to the point it is near impossible to machine.  Doesn't sound like too bad a material to make cranks from.
