I remember the Pontiac aluminum manifolds. They failed VERY quickly during  
initial testing. Not exactly a meltdown, but they fell apart once they got up 
to  temperature.

were indeed exhaust manifolds. I believe Pontiac used some cast aluminum  
exhaust manifolds on some of their "Super-Duty" drag cars in the early 60's.  
Perhaps Drag racng never put enough heat in for a long enough time to cause  melt
