Interesting topic. The first econorun I ran (in recent history) was in
about '99 to the Port Townsend WA regional meet. I didn't know that any
modifications were permitted nor did I know of any special driving
techniques. I figured that I had a chance since my 140 Monza had 3.27
gearing and EFI. I just drove gently at highway speeds (65-70) and got
29.75 mpg. Imagine my chagrin when I didn't even come close to a trophy (by
about 10 mpg). I asked around as to what people did to achieve those
phenomenal numbers. 40 psi, off on downhills, pick the right 100 mile
stretch (flatter terrain), loose belt, daytime, 45 mph, slow acceleration,
and minimal braking. In my next econorun driving my carbureted '67 140
w/3.08 sedan and following these techniques I achieved 38.9 mpg and first
overall. My take from that exercise was that I preferred the former
approach; that being modify the car as needed to achieve the best REAL WORLD
fuel economy and prove it during the econorun. The catch is, what is "REAL
WORLD" acceptable in terms of modifications.
