May I suggest looking at the fans inside current turbo units. A lot of R&D
has gone into maximum intake with minimum back pressure. Antique centrifugal
fans have straight vanes and look almost identical to Corvair fans. Modern
turbocharger fans have a curved leading edge at the center of the fan that
straighten out towards the outer edge. Page 65 of Corky Bell's book
Supercharged has a perfect example.

Modern centrifugal fans designed for HVAC work have had forward-curved or
backward-inclined blower wheels for the last 45 years or so; fans designed for
dust collectors where they are handling solids with the air have radial wheels
so they don't get clogged up with stuff.
