The mention of the Cambria Pinedorado brings back some of my past ! I was
stationed at an USAF radar site in Cambria in the late 50's and also worked
part time at a Shell Station in Cambria and during the Pinedorado in 1957 Both
William Randolph Hearst Jr. and Bing Crosby were co- Grand Marshalls of the
parade, they road a couple of Hearst's horses. They both came into the station
and I put gas in Bings 55 T-bird ( red ) Hearst did not get gas but drove a
47 Buick convt. and his wife drove a 55 Chevy nomad.
The Hearst Castle is just 9 miles north and in San Simeon they had a
warehouse full of statues and stuff and Bing was buying up some of the statues,
the State took over the Castle in 1958 for a State Park attraction. The Hearst
Family still had the use of one of two Guest houses and ranch land.
